The Germany Under-17s missed out on topping their group in qualification for this summer’s European Championship (4th to 20th May in England), but punched their ticket to the tournament nonetheless. The Michael Prus coached side lost their final qualifier 1-0 against Scotland. With four points already earned, however, the Germany went through in second place as one of the seven best runner ups from all eight qualification groups.
Germany managed to create numerous chances in what was a fiery encounter, but they just couldn’t make them count. Adedapo Awokoya-Mebuda scored the winner for Scotland in the 57th minute.
“We’re glad to be a part of this summer’s tournament in England, but we made things very difficult for ourselves today and didn’t take our chances well enough,” said Michael Prus after the game. “We didn’t get into our rhythm in the second half and we weren’t precise enough with what we were doing after we conceded.”
Elsewhere in group 8, Norway beat hosts Greece 2-0 and confirmed their position at the top of the standings with a total of seven points. The Germany Under-17s kicked off their qualification campaign with a 2-2 draw against the Norwegians, before beating Greece themselves 3-0.
