The Bundesliga is back!

The Bundesliga returns this weekend with matchday 18 after more than a month off due to the winter break. The action gets underway tomorrow (30th January, 20:30 CET), as leaders Bayern München travel to second placed VfL Wolfsburg. There is already an eleven point gap between the two sides at the half way stage and a win for Bayern would see them pull even further away from the chasing pack. But if any team knows how to overcome a significant points gap at the top of the table then it’s hosts Wolfsburg, who overcame the same difference back in 2008/09 when they went on to win the title.

Another huge game this weekend will take place at the BayArena on Saturday evening (18:30 CET), when second-bottom Borussia Dortmund visit third placed Bayer 04 Leverkusen. Dortmund will be trying to begin their second half to the season on a different note to how they ended 2014, but that won’t be easy against Bayer 04, who are yet to lose at home so far this season. Elsewhere on Saturday at 15:30 CET, Schalke 04 host Hannover 96, Hamburger SV meet 1. FC Köln, bottom of the league SC Freiburg will welcome Eintracht Frankfurt to the Mage Solar Stadion and surprise package SC Paderborn will travel to 1. FSV Mainz 05. Finally on Saturday, Borussia Mönchengladbach, who currently occupy the final Champions League spot, will be hoping to build on their good first half of the season as they travel to VfB Stuttgart, where the two oldest managers in the league (Huub Stevens and Lucien Favre) will come up against each other.

On Sunday at 15:30 CET, Hertha BSC will be looking to win in Bremen for the first time since March 2006. Werder Bremen are unbeaten at home since Viktor Skripnik took over in October; however, it could be a high scoring affair at the Weserstadion as the two worst defences in the league so far this season go up against each other. The action will come to a close at 17:30 CET on Sunday as FC Augsburg host TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. Augsburg currently sit in sixth and a Europa League place but TSG are hot on their heels and are only a point adrift, so it could prove to be an important game for both sides.
