Ter Stegen helps Barca reach the semis

Marc-André Ter Stegen, who is Claudio Bravo’s understudy in La Liga, started Barcelona’s Spanish Cup quarter-final second-leg tie against Athletico Madrid and helped them reach the semi-finals. The 22-year-old former Gladbach goalkeeper had to pick the ball out of the net just seconds into the game; Fernando Torres opened the scoring inside the first minute. Barca were level soon after, thanks to Brazilian superstar Neymar (9’).

The game at the Estadio Vicente Calderon exploded into life before the interval: Raul Garcia (30’) scored from the spot to give Athletico the lead, but an own-goal from Miranda (38’) and Neymar’s second (31’) meant that Barca led 3-2 at the break (4-2 on aggregate). During the interval Gabi, Athletico’s captain, was sent off.

Barca closed the game out after the break. Athletico finised with nine men as a result of Mario Suarez picking up his second yellow card. Ter Stegen and Barcelona will face Villarreal or Getafe in the semi-final.
