Sané assist in City win

Premier League leaders, Man City, stretched the gap at the top of the table as they beat Leicester City 2-0. Meanwhile, Emre Can came on for the last 20 minutes of Liverpool’s 3-0 home win against Southampton.

City now top the table with 34 points, while Liverpool and Arsenal both sit on 22 points. Arsenal moved up to this tally early this afternoon, as they beat Tottenham 2-1 in the North London Derby. Shkodran Mustafi got on the scoresheet, and was assisted by Mesut Özil.

Sané starts, Gündogan on the bench

Gabriel Jesus put Guardiola’s Man City in front in the first half, before Kevin De Bruyne doubled their lead in the second, courtesy of a Leroy Sané. Sané played the full 90 minutes, while Gündogan was an unused substitute.

Emre Can started on the bench in Liverpool’s game against Southampton. The Reds went in 2-0 up at the break, thanks to a brace from Mohamed Salah. Can was brought on shortly after Countinho secured the three points, as he added a third goal with just over 20 minutes go.

Kroos features for Real in goalless derby

Real Madrid slipped further away in the battle to top La Liga. While FC Barcelona and goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen enjoyed a convincing 3-0 win over CD Leganés, Toni Kroos and Real Madrid could only manage a goalless draw in the derby against Atlético Madrid.

Barcelona are already on 34 points after 12 matchdays, Valencia are the current runners-up with 27 points, while Real are in third place with 24 points, equal to the tally of Atlético Madrid.

Kroos put in a strong performance in the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium and had a chance to take the lead in the 32nd minute. The World Cup winner shot narrowly left of the target after being set up by Cristiano Ronaldo during a spell of the game in which Real were applying huge amounts of pressure. Atlético keeper Jan Oblak managed to deal with a Ronaldo free kick with an excellent save (35’) and Sergio Ramos’ header went close to the target after a cross from Kroos (37’).

Real remained the more energetic of the two teams in the second half but couldn’t find a way to break through against their local rivals, who were sitting deep. Ronaldo had the biggest chance of the match shortly before the end, when the five-time World Footballer of the Year had only Oblak to beat after a pass down the line, but he was stopped by a slide tackle in front of goal (89’).

The champions had chances to take the lead through Higuain, Cuadrado and Khedira, but were stunned by three second half Sampdoria goals.
