REWE named as National Supporter of Women’s World Cup 2011

FIFA is proud to announce REWE as the fourth National Supporter of the FIFA Women’s World Cup Germany 2011™. The deal, which lasts until the end of 2011 and also includes the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup 2010, was signed on 15 June 2009 by Mr Alain Caparros, CEO REWE Group.

The agreement can be seen as a further sign of REWE’s support for the development of women’s football in the FIFA Women’s World Cup™’s host market, following the announcement of the business enterprise as “Premium Partner Frauen” of the Deutscher Fussball Bund (DFB) in January 2009.

“We are delighted to have REWE on board at the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2011 and the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Germany” said FIFA Secretary General, Jérôme Valcke “Their high-profile deals with the DFB and now with FIFA highlight their long-term commitment to women’s football and we are very excited about experiencing the two events with our new National Supporter”.

“REWE’s heart and soul is clearly in football,” declared REWE Vollsortiment Deutschland general manager Lionel Souque. “Our biggest hope now is that women’s football attracts many new fans, and for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2011 on home soil to go down as another highlight. Our commitment to women’s football extends beyond conventional sponsorship. Naturally, we’re not trying to turn our customers into elite athletes, but we do want to get across the importance of nutrition and activity for individual well-being,” Souque continued.

“We’re delighted we’ve found such a strong and reliable player in the nutritional sector, especially as REWE is one of the most important supporters of women’s football in Germany. The fact we’ve now concluded deals with four National Supporters at such an early point in time once again demonstrates the attractiveness of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, and the high expectations specifically associated with Germany 2011,” commented OC President Steffi Jones.

“Having a company like REWE on our side is a perfect combination. Alongside REWE’s commitment as a Premium Partner of our women’s national team, the company is now opening up numerous additional channels for supporting the women’s game as a National Supporter of the FIFA Women’s World Cup,” added DFB general secretary Wolfgang Niersbach.

The official press conference to announce the deal will take place on Thursday 18 June 2009 as part of the “Countdown in Bochum”. This event will be hosted at the FIFA Women’s World Cup Stadium, Bochum and is one of a series of events aimed at enhancing awareness, popularity and enthusiasm in the build-up to the tournament.

REWE is the fourth German company to sign up as a National Supporter of the tournament, following confirmation of deals with Deutsche Telekom, Commerzbank and Allianz. With over two years to go until the FIFA Women’s World Cup™ begins, four of the six National Supporters deals have already been signed, highlighting the wide interest in the tournament.
