Osnabrück ready for next DFB-Pokal scalp

It was the biggest surprise of the DFB-Pokal first round. Third division side VfL Osnabrück eliminated the Bundesliga’s Hamburger SV 3-1, despite having only ten men for over 70 minutes of the game in a repeat of their shock win in 2009. Back then, Osnabrück eliminated HSV in the second round of the DFB-Pokal on penalties.

Following the win against Hamburger SV, Bundesliga 2’s 1. FC Nürnberg await VfL Osnabrück.

Three DFB-Pokal clashes previously

1. FC Nürnberg’s sporting director, Andreas Bornemann, is wary of the opposition: “We can’t underestimate Osnabrück – especially after they eliminated Hamburg in the first round. However, our goal is to get through into the next round, especially against a team in the third tier.” Osnabrück’s general manager, Jürgen Wehlend, is looking forward to inviting 1. FC Nürnberg to the Bremer Brücke: “It’s a very appealing draw.”

The most recent game between the two traditional teams took place quite some time ago. On Matchday 32 of the 2008/2009 season, FCN won 2-0 at home to the Lily-Whites. The teams have faced one another three times in the DFB-Pokal. The first time, FCN won 1-0 in 1977. The second time, Osnabrück were 3-1 winners in 1983 and, most recently, in 1998, Nürnberg won 2-0 in Osnabrück.

In this year’s competition, 1. FC Nürnberg qualified for the second round by beating MSV Duisburg 2-1. Last season, FCN were knocked out in the second round by FC Schalke 04 after a narrow 3-2 defeat.
