Olympic champion Bartusiak retires from international football

Saskia Bartusiak has brought her career with the Germany women’s team to an end. The team captain, who won a gold medal against Sweden in the final of the Olympic Games in Rio, said: "This decision has been coming for a few months now. I informed Silvia Neid, Ulrike Ballweg, Michael Fuchs and of course the new head coach Steffi Jones before the start of the tournament. It was clear to me that this would be my final tournament. My international career is ending with winning a gold medal in the world-famous Maracana while wearing the national team’s shirt. It is a perfect full stop.”

Bartusiak continued, “I think that it is the right time for me. I can look back on my career with pride, and I have made many friends in the side. It was an incredible time in the national team, and it always meant an huge amount to me to be a part of these wonderful teams. I have come to know many wonderful people in my near-ten years with the national team. Many of them will remain in my heart, which to me reflects what a wonderful time I have had in the team.”

Neid on Bartusiak: “She is the kind of person who never gives up”

Silvia Neid said of her departing captain, “Saskia was always an extremely important player for me. She was reliable, disciplined, a leader and a fighter. The way she returned from her difficult times with injury was so impressive. She is the kind of person who never gives up. I can completely understand her decision and I wish her nothing but the very best in the future.”

33-year old Bartusiak made her international debut on 12th April 2007 against the Netherlands. She retires with 101 caps to her name. As a Germany international, she became a World champion in 2007, a European champion in both 2009 and 2011, and now an Olympic gold medallist. She succeeded Nadine Angerer as the DFB women’s captain after the 2015 World Cup.
