New U 21 draw 0-0 with Italy

The U 21 national team came to a goalless draw with Italy on Wednesday in their first home game in 2007. 8000 spectators saw an interesting game with Germany having a slight advantage.

The game at Reutlingen’s Stadion an der Kreuzeiche was part of an international tourney between Italy, Austria, Switzerland and Germany. Coach Dieter Eilts’ squad is ranked in second place behind Italy.

Eilts had nominated eleven new players, who have never worn Germany’s U 21 jersey before. The U 21 novices Andreas Beck (VfB Stuttgart), Daniel Brinkmann (SC Paderborn 07), Kai Bülow (FC Hansa Rostock), Mounir Chaftar (Eintracht Frankfurt), Torben Joneleit (AS Monaco), Mergim Mavraj (SV Darmstadt 98), Sören Halfar (Hannover 96), Rouwen Hennings (Hamburger SV), Bernd Nehrig (Spvgg. Unterhaching) and Stephan Fürstner (FC Bayern München) all got a chance to play their international debut.

Germany had lost the first leg in Pistoia 1-0 in December, but has won the first game of the year, registering a 2-0 victory in Cumbernauld (Switzerland). Germany’s U 21 team will enter the qualifying round for the 2009 European Championship on September with a game in Northern Ireland.
