Neuer set to miss the rest of 2017

Germany’s No. 1 Manuel Neuer will be sidelined for the rest of the first half of the season after suffering another hairline fracture in his left foot. FC Bayern broke the news on Tuesday morning after he underwent a successful operation to put a metal plate in the injured foot.

“It’s a real shame for him that he’s picked up another injury like this,” said Bayern’s chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. “The operation went well, and that’s the main thing. We expect Manuel will be at full strength in January and available for selection then.”

The 31-year-old goalkeeper suffered the injury in training ahead of the game against Schalke 04. He obtained a similar injury in his left foot in the Champions League against Real Madrid in April, which forced him to miss several months as well. He made his comeback from that injury on 26th August against Werder Bremen.

Déjà Vu

Neuer’s foot injury problems all started in March, when he suffered a hairline fracture in the middle of his foot. His recovery was handled very carefully, as he didn’t train for several weeks and even went to his own wedding on crutches. He also broke his right foot at the beginning of his career, although it was while he was still playing for Schalke.

Sven Ulreich will be Neuer’s replacement in the Bayern net, having already made three competitive appearances at the beginning of the season. The new backup will be 17-year-old Christian Früchtl, after Tom Starke announced his retirement in the summer.
