Mayer-Vorfelder elected member of FIFA Executive Comitee

At the UEFA Congress in Stockholm, DFB President Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder has been elected, in the first ballot, to the FIFA Executive Committe as one of the European Confederation's representatives.

Receiving 27 from a total of 51 votes, Mayer-Vorfelder asserted himself against rival candidates Joseph Mifsud (Malta), Michel Platini (France) and Per Ravn Omdal who had held the position until then.

Mayer-Vorfelder was followed in the second ballot by Michel Platini who received 20 votes; Franco Carraro (Italy) had withdrawn his candidacy before voting began.

"Thanks to my work in the UEFA Executive Committee and to heading the official DFB delegation at the German national team's matches, I am much better known now than I used to be while working exclusively within FIFA", said the DFB President to explain his patent success. He confirmed that being "an advocate for Europe" at FIFA would not keep him from striving for the right balance of interests in world football. created by dt
