Magdeburg look forward to welcoming “dream opponent” Borussia Dortmund

It is a dream draw for third division side 1. FC Magdeburg: Next Tuesday, they face defending champions Borussia Dortmund in the second round of the DFB-Pokal. The Blue-Whites’ anticipation ahead of the tie is huge.

“Dortmund are one of the opponents that we all wanted. The atmosphere will be sensational. We’re looking forward to it, even though it will be a tough tie,” Magdeburg’s head coach Jens Härtel said about the match against the Champions League participants. FCM captain Marius Sowislo also can’t wait: “It is something special to draw Dortmund. The whole of Magdeburg can’t wait for the match.”

The excitement in the city is already brewing. A 23,000 sell-out crowd will cheer on the team in the MDCC-Arena against the eight-time league champions and four-time DFB-Pokal winners.

BVB captain Schmelzer born and bred in Magdeburg

The DFB-Pokal clash isn’t just a highlight for the spectators. In Marcel Schmelzer, a player who was born and grew up in Magdeburg will be captaining Dortmund on Tuesday. The 29-year-old left-back came through the youth academy at FCM before moving to Dortmund when he was 17. Now the 16-time Germany international goes back home.

The Yellow and Blacks have good memories of cup ties against Magdeburg. On the way to the final in 2008, BVB won 4-1 away at Magdeburg on 4th August 2007 in the first round. Ebi Smolarek scored early on for Dortmund whilst Diego Klimowicz doubled their lead after half an hour. Eric Agyemang pulled one back for Magdeburg just before the break but Mladen Petric (75’) netted and Klimowicz got his second to seal victory for BVB.

In this season’s competition, Borussia Dortmund advanced to the second round with a simple 4-0 win against Verbandsliga outfit 1. FC Rielasingen-Arlen. Meanwhile, Magdeburg stunned the Bundesliga’s FC Augsburg, winning 2-0 in front of a bouncing home crowd.
