Leipzig win first ever Champions League match

Leipzig have won their first ever Champions League game. The Bundesliga side beat Porto 3-2, meaning they have jumped up to second place in Group G. The match also saw Timo Werner make his return from injury, as he was brought on midway through the second half. However, Borussia Dortmund could only manage a 1-1 draw away to APOEL. The result means Dortmund find themselves in third place in Group H, ahead of APOEL only on goal difference.

Kroos earns his side a crucial penalty

In Group H’s other game, Toni Kroos and Real Madrid dropped their first points of this Champions League campaign, as they drew 1-1 to Tottenham Hotspur. However, Kroos put in a very strong performance, and also earned his team the penalty that Ronaldo converted. Kroos made a driving run into the Tottenham box, before being brought down by Serge Aurier. Following the draw, both teams are now on seven points with identical goal differences at the top of the group.

Victories for Leroy Sané, Gündogan, and Can

Tuesday evening also saw Leroy Sané, Ilkay Gündogan and Emre Can secure victories for their clubs. All of these German players plying their trades abroad now find themselves on the way to winning their respective groups. Manchester City’s Sané and Gündogan beat Napoli 2-1, with Sané playing the full ninety minutes, and with Gündogan coming on for the final fifteen. The result means the Premier League leaders now also lead their group, having won three games out of three so far. Meanwhile, Emre Can got to enjoy a goal-fest, as Liverpool beat NK Maribor 7-0. With five points, “The Reds” are now in first place in Group E, courtesy of their now much-improved goal difference.
