Last-placed BVB suffer next setback against Augsburg

Borussia Dortmund have suffered yet another setback in their attempt to escape the relegation battle, leaving them bottom of the Bundesliga after matchday 20 as well. Last season’s runners-up were beaten 1-0 at home by FC Augsburg, despite playing the final 26 minutes with a man extra. It’s the eleventh defeat of the campaign for World Champions Mats Hummels, Roman Weidenfeller, Kevin Großkreutz, Matthias Ginter & Co. The only silver lining is that the gap to 15th-placed SC Freiburg and thus safety remains just two points.

Whilst the nightmare continues for Dortmund, Augsburg continue their high-flying form. Weinzierl’s team now have eleven wins to their name and move up to fourth, level on points with Borussia Mönchengladbach (33).

Leverkusen, Bremen and Hamburg move up the table

Bayer Leverkusen (32 points) have also moved up a place. The Werkself have jumped above FC Schalke 04 (32 points) into fifth thanks to their 1-0 win against Hertha BSC. Berlin have now been drawn even further into the relegation battle after their third loss in a row, with Luhukay’s side second bottom on 18 points.

Werder Bremen have distanced themselves from the relegation zone. Their 2-1 win against 1899 Hoffenheim (7th, 26 points) was their third win in a row. Viktor Skripnik’s side have now moved up to eleventh on 23 points. Their northern rivals, Hamburg, also celebrated three points after they beat SC Paderborn (14th, 19 points) 3-0 and occupy 13th place on 20 points.

The fifth game of the evening finished in a goalless draw between 1. FC Köln and VfB Stuttgart. Köln remain in eleventh (23 points), whilst VfB move into a relegation spot (16th), with 18 points to their name.

Bobadilla shocks BVB

After their 0-0 draw against Leverkusen at the weekend, Borussia Dortmund took control of their game against Augsburg from the off and had the better of the first half. But as so often in the first half of the season, they failed to make their dominance count, as Germany international Marco Reus could only fire wide of the left-hand post in the 15th minute. Those that were expecting Dortmund to make a comeback were left disappointed. BVB pushed forward, but were mostly restricted to the edge of FCA’s box and were unable to create a dangerous opportunity to score.

The 80,667 fans in Dortmund then suddenly became silent in the 50th minute. Halil Altintop dribbled through the whole of BVB’s defence and the ball fell to Raul Bobadilla, who fired Augsburg 1-0 in front. Those that were expecting Dortmund to make a comeback were left disappointed. BVB pushed forward, but were mostly restricted to the edge of FCA’s box and were unable to create a dangerous opportunity to score.

Dortmund were faced with a ten-man wall after Christoph Janker was sent off in the 64th minute, but Augsburg stood firm as BVB pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages.

Di Santo and Bargfrede leave Werder celebrating

Franco Di Santo scored early on in Sinsheim to give the travelling Bremen fans something to cheer about. The Argentinian, who scored both goals in their 2-0 win against Hertha BSC at the weekend, left Hoffenheim goalkeeper with no chance as he scored in just the 8th minute. TSG came into the game and also had chances to score, but Raphael Wolf stood strong to keep out Germany international Kevin Volland in the 17th minute.

But Wolf had to pick the ball out the back of his net in the 34th minute after Ermin Bicakcic scored his first ever goal for Hoffenheim. After the restart, Werder were celebrating once more as Philipp Bargfrede restored the visitors’ lead (52’).
