DFB coach Stefan Kuntz has announced his squad for Germany U21s’ first two matches of 2018. The side will take on Israel in Braunschweig on March 22nd and Kosovo in Mitrovica on March 27th with the aim of qualifying for the U21 European Championships and keeping hold of their title. Within the squad, Nadiem Amiri (TSG 1899 Hoffenheim), Waldemar Anton (Hannover 96), Mahmoud Dahoud (Borussia Dortmund), Thilo Kehrer (FC Schalke 04) and Levin Öztunali (1. FSV Mainz 05) were all part of last summer’s title winning side. In Florian Müller (1. FSV Mainz 05) and Salih Özcan (1. FC Köln), there will be two new faces in the 23 man set-up.
Stefan Kuntz said: “We’re looking forward to having two new additions within the squad in Florian Müller and Salih Özcan. Both have put in good performances at club level which brought them to our attention. We’re fully focused on taking on Israel and Kosovo as we want to defend our top spot in the table. In our home game, we hope the fans will get behind us in Braunschweig and it’ll be a special atmosphere in Kosovo.”
The U21s national team will train in the evening of Monday 19th March in Braunschweig. On Wednesday 21st March, head coach Kuntz and some of his players will visit a children’s cancer ward in Braunschweig. In the evening of the same day, the reigning European Championship holders will take part in an open training session in Eintracht’s stadium.
In the reverse fixtures, the U21 side won against Kosovo and Isreal in qualification. In November of last year, there was a 5-2 win in Ramat Gan and, in September 2017, Kosovo were defeated 1-0 in Osnabrück. The Germany team lead their qualification group with 12 points from 5 games as they aim to qualify for the European Championships in 2019.
