World Cup winner Toni Kroos has won his second title of the new season with Real Madrid. Champions Madrid, who also won the European Super Cup, secured the Spanish competition of the same name without the suspended Cristiano Ronaldo through a 2-0 second-leg win against Copa del Rey holders Barcelona, who played with Germany keeper Marc-André ter Stegen. Los Blancos had already won the first leg in Barcelona 3-1.
Ronaldo was banned for five matches after the first leg victory for lightly shoving referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea. In the absence of the Portuguese Euro 2016 winner, Marco Asensio (4’) scored early to make it 1-0 before Karim Benzema (39’) doubled the Champions League holders’ lead before the break and Lucas Vazquez hit the post shortly before that (33’). Kroos was subbed off in the 80th minute in his 150th appearance for Real Madrid. Real also won the European Super Cup last week with a 2-1 win against Europa League winners Manchester United.
