Klose and Lazio make the semis, Chelsea reach final without Schürrle

World Champion Miroslav Klose and his Lazio team mates have qualified for the semi-finals of the Italian Cup. The FIFA World Cup’s record goalscorer helped his side to a 1-0 victory over AC Milan. The sides met three days previously in the league, a game which the side from Rome won 3-1.

Klose, who won the Coppa Italia with Lazio in 2013, missed an early chance to give Lazio the lead. The 36-year-old, who scored and assisted a goal on Saturday, latched onto a misplaced pass but was unable to capitalise fully on the error (9’).

Lucas Biglia gave the visitors the lead from the spot after 38 minutes. Lazio played the entire second half with 10 men, as Lorik Cana was sent off shortly before the break (44’).

In England, Chelsea qualified for the final of the League Cup, despite not including André Schürrle in the squad. At the end of normal time the aggregate scores were level (1-1 at Anfield last week and 0-0 after 90 minutes at Stamford Bridge), but Chelsea scored in extra-time to seal a place in the final. Germany U21 midfielder Emre Can completed the game for Liverpool.

Branislav Ivanovic’s goal (94’) won the game for Chelsea, who now have the chance to win the trophy for the fifth time. The final takes place at Wembley on 1st March and will see the Blues face either local rivals Tottenham Hotspur or third tier side Sheffield United. The return leg of that semi-final takes place on Wednesday (20:45 CET).
