Jones calls up Bianca Schmidt and two new faces for France game

Bianca Schmidt is making her return to the national side after more than two years on the outside looking in. Head coach Steffi Jones called up the 1. FFC Turbine defender to her squad of 24 players that will face France on 24th November.

Jones said: “Bianca has put in a string of good performances for her club over the last few months and has caught our attention as a result. She’s really strong in one-on-one situations, athletic and covers a lot of ground.”

Jones has to do without numerous injured players yet again. Pauline Bremer, Sara Dabritz, Carolin Simon, Sara Doorsoun and Kristin Demann were all not available. Captain Dzsenifer Marozsán is returning on the other hand. Giulia Gwinn (SC Freiburg) and Jana Feldkamp (SGS Essen) have both been selected for the first time.

France will “demand everything of us”

Steffi Jones continued: “We always want to call up players who have are performing at the U20 level, to make sure that the jump up to this one isn’t too overwhelming. Therefore, we’re in very close communication with the U20s coach Maren Meinart, to avoid overworking them. We want our U20 squad for the 2018 Women’s U20 World Cup to be as strong as possible.”

The clash with France, who are the hosts of the 2019 Women’s World Cup, is the last international of the calendar year for Germany. “Similar to us, they’ve got a very different looking squad to usual,” said Steffi Jones. “They’re utilizing a mixture of experienced players along with young players. We know that France are very technically gifted and comfortable on the ball.

They’ll demand everything of us. We need to have the right mentality on the pitch and want to make things difficult for them in all areas of the pitch. This is a great challenge for us which will show us where we are as a team.”
