Gündogan on his sprained knee: “It’s not serious”

Germany international Ilkay Gündogan injured his left knee while playing for Premier League leaders Manchester City in their cup tie on Wednesday, and it was confirmed on Thursday that the ex-Dortmund man had suffered a sprain. “Thankfully I can tell you that my injury is not serious,” posted the 26-year-old on twitter, thanking his followers for the numerous messages he had received. “I hope to be back on the pitch soon.”

Head coach Pep Guardiola was already fairly certain after the 2-1 victory over West Brom had finished that the injury “is not so bad as before.” Gündogan, who made his return to the pitch in the middle of August after an eight month recovery period from a torn ACL, was forced off in the 59th minute after a strong tackle.

City determined that their doctors could detect “no significant damage” as a result of the collision. It’s not yet known how long he will be out for, although he is “expected back on the training pitch in the next few days.” The ex-Bayern Coach Guardiola said that “it was a fierce collision, but thankfully he’s not badly injured. The doctors have told me that it’s not a serious injury.”
