Goessling: “There are no favourites”

The Germany Women have made it through to the Euro quarter-finals as group winners, dominating games and combining excellently. The only thing missing has been that cutting edge in front of goal. Both goals in the 2-0 win over Russia came from the penalty spot, meaning that the eight-time European champions have scored four goals in three games, all of which have come from set-pieces. Nevertheless, Lena Goeßling and Sara Doorsoun, who made their tournament debuts against Russia, spoke to DFB.de about why they are feeling optimistic ahead of their last 8 tie with Denmark on Saturday (20:45 CEST).

Lena Goeßling on...

... her excitement ahead of her comeback: I can still feel it today. I was really excited before the match because I had not played in so long. Then you start thinking too much about what is going to happen but it went well and I woke up today feeling positive.

... her long time out with injury: It dragged on for quite a while. I underwent some good rehabilitation and was cared for excellently. Steffi Jones was also giving me support constantly. She said that if I’m ready, I’m ready, and if not, then I’m not.

... winning the group: The goal was to finish the group as winners, so we are delighted with that.

... making the most of chances: We have been working specifically on finishing. We need to have that killer final ball and that burning desire to score. Our strikers have not hit top form yet.

... being favourites against Denmark: When you look at the world rankings, we are in second place. If you go according to that, then we are favourites but I think that there are no favourites any more when you reach the knockout stages.

... her chances of being in the starting XI again: We all give our services to the team. It is important that we are now in the middle of the tournament and have played but we have a balanced squad. Every player knows the situation.

Sara Doorsoun on...

... putting chances away: We have the potential to do it. I think that we will succeed in doing that on Saturday. We need to reward ourselves. If we create the chances, then we also need to make the most of them.

... their upcoming opponents, Denmark: The coaching staff will prepare us well for them. That is important for us so that there aren’t any surprises for us. We need to take advantage of the chances that we create and then if we get the basics right like strong tackling and combining with each other well on the day, then we will play well. We just need to perform strongly, give our best and then things will be positive.

... the Danes’ playing system: Those who have been following the tournament will have seen that every team is pretty tactical. But in the knockout stage it is just about getting through which is why no team is going to just sit back and park the bus.

... her chances of being in the starting XI again: I’m glad to be part of this team. I am always there and ready to play. The quality we have in this team is high. I think it is great that we have so many options.
