Ginter: “I didn’t want to have to wait that long”

It’s crunch time for Matthias Ginter. With his club, Borussia Mönchengladbach, the World Cup winner is fighting for a place in Europe and wants to make the squad for this summer’s World Cup. The 24-year-old spoke about the opening of his own foundation his hopes of heading to Russia and his upcoming game against Leverkusen.

DFB.de: Mr Ginter, why have you decided to start this foundation?

Matthias Ginter: I used to visit a clinic in Dortmund when I was there. I’d give the kids shirts, sign autographs and so. I visited them numerous times and I wanted to them even more. Children need support. That’s why I created this foundation and it’s something I want to keep doing after I retire from football. I’m feeling good now and want to play for another ten years or so but I didn’t want to wait that long to start my foundation.

DFB.de: Next up for you is a tough game on Saturday night against Leverkusen. How huge is this game for you?

Ginter: It’s crucial. It’s against a serious rival of ours. We’ve got four points from our last two games but we want to keep improving, We know how dangerous Leverkusen can be, especially away from home, so we’re going to have to play as best as we can.

DFB.de: How has the season been for you so far?

Ginter: My move has done me the world of good. In Gladbach, I have a position nailed down and that’s key. You grow as a player when you become a key player in a team. It shows the head coach and the whole club have their faith in me. That’s been crucial in helping me come along as a player. The last few months have been important for me.

DFB.de: You’ve been putting in solid performances consistently and have played in every Bundesliga game so far this season.

Ginter: I’ve been injury-free and have been working hard to look after myself to prevent myself from getting a knock. When you look back and reflect, you see how far you’ve come so far. I live a healthy lifestyle, I eat well and sleep well.

DFB.de: On May 15th, Die Mannschaft’s head coach, Jogi Löw, will announce his squad for this summer’s World Cup. Do you think you’re in contention?

Ginter: I’ve asked myself that question quite a lot in the past few weeks! I think I did well with the national team last year. We won the Confed Cup, I played in the autumn internationals and my move has helped me a lot. Therefore, I think my chances have increased. I will keep trying to perform and improve. I will be doing everything in power to be on the plane. That’s all I can do. It can’t stress enough how much I want to be at the World Cup in Russia this summer.
