Germany women beat Czech Republic 1-0

Two games, two victories. The Germany women’s national football team are well on their way to qualification for the 2019 World Cup in France after winning their second qualifier. Eva Bartonova’s 51st minute own goal decided the result for Steffi Jones’ side, who now move into the top position in qualification group 5.

Jones only made one change to the side that beat Slovenia 6-0 last Saturday, as Laura Benkarth replaced the injured Almuth Schult in goal. The German side came out in a 4-4-2 formation, with Leonie Maier, Kathrin Hendrich, Babett Peter and Carolin Simon in defence. Kristin Demann, captain Dzsenifer Marozsan, Simone Laudehr and Sara Däbritz played in midfield, while Potsdam duo Tabea Kemme and Svenja Huth started up front.

Bartonova goes from hero to zero

After the Czech side dominated the early period of the game, Germany took more and more control as the match unfolded. However, they couldn’t break the deadlock in the first half, and both teams went into the dressing rooms with much still to do. At the beginning of the second half, the Czechs needed heroics from Eva Bartonova to deny the Germans an equaliser. She headed the ball of the line after goalkeeper Eva Votikova was on the ground (50’). However, only a minute later, a misunderstanding between the pair on how to deal with a cross led to Bartonova passing the ball into her own net (51’). 1-0 Germany.

Germany managed to contain the following pressure from the Czech side, and the score would finish 1-0 after 90 minutes, despite the fact that the Czech Republiv managed to hit the post and come very close with a header.
