Germany U17s too good for Colombia in 4-0 victory

The World Cup dream is still alive. The Germany U17s qualified for the quarterfinals in India after a 4-0 win against Colombia at the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium in New Delhi. Hamburg’s Jann-Fiete Arp, who captained the side, scored his third and fourth goals of the tournament, while Cologne’s Yann-Aurel Bisseck and VfL Wolfsburg’s John Yeboah scored the other two goals to secure Germany’s position as one of the best eight teams in the tournament. They will play the winner of the game between Brazil and Honduras in the next round.

“We know what mentality we have to approach the game with,” said assistant coach Dennis Lamby before the clash. Lamby would have been proud of his squad, as they showed exactly the type of mentality that you need when going up against a resilient South American team. Arp put Germany ahead in the seventh minute after controlling the ball in the penalty area before spinning and finishing it off with authority.

Germany in control

Head coach Christian Wück was forced to make his first substitution only five minutes later. Yannik Keitel picked up an injury, and so Josha Vagnoman came on as his replacement (12’). Despite having to change their personnel so early, Germany didn’t allow this to get in the way of how they wanted to play. The Colombians had more of the possession with 61 percent, however, and came close through Robert Mejia (14’) and Thomas Gutierrez (24’). Germany were well organised in defence other than that though, and Colombia didn’t have any other chances to write home about for the rest of the first half. At the other end of the pitch, Germany pushed forward dangerously. In the 32nd minute, a wicked cross from Dennis Jastrzembski didn’t find anyone at the end of it, and Yeboah hit the post a mere two minutes later. Elias Abouchabaka put the follow-up just wide (34’).

Bisseck showed just how much of an aerial threat he is in the 39th minute. The Cologne man rose the highest to get his head to a corner from Sahverdi Cetin and power Germany to a 2-0 lead. Their advantage could have been even more going into the break after Jastrzembski and Yeboah both came close, but it was not to be.

Perfect start to the second half

Shortly after the break, Yeboah destroyed any Colombian hopes of a comeback. After a stellar bit of build-up play from Arp, the 17-year-old made no mistake to make the score 3-0 (49’). Germany were in complete control of the game at this point. Arp cut out a cross from Guillermo Tegue, before he ran on to the loose ball. He then casually chipped the onrushing Kevin Mier to put an exclamation point on the game. 4-0 to Germany in the 65th minute. The Hamburg man then left the field shortly after to a big round of applause from the crowd. Jessic Ngankam was replaced him.

Colombia found themselves under yet more pressure as the game wound down, but Mier managed to pull out a couple of good stops which denied Elias Abouchabaka in the 66th and 70th minutes, and made sure that the loss wasn’t even worse for the South Americans.
