Germany lose to France in SheBelieves Cup

However, it was France who would strike the next blow. An unmarked Eugenie Le Sommer tucked the ball home from six metres out (56’). Jones reacted quickly to bring on Linda Dallmann and her offensive creativity for Anna Blässe. It was the French who were celebrating yet again though, as Le Sommer led a counter-attack to set up a third French goal through Gauvin (68’). Late substitutes Hasret Kayicki (80’) and Mandy Islacker (87’) couldn’t help Germany get off the mark and so the game ended 3-0. Lena Goeßling also came on to win her 100th cap for the national team.

The Germany Women’s National Team concluded their SheBelieves Cup campaign with a disappointing loss. Steffi Jones’s side fell to France 3-0 in the Orlando City Stadium and end the tournament in last place with one point from their three games.

“We’re very disappointed with our performance tonight,” said midfielder Sara Däbritz. “We have to bounce back.”

Germany started with a lot of energy and put France under duress with their pressing. It was the final pass that was missing. France took the lead against the run of play in the tenth minute, when Amandine Henry found space on the edge of the box, before leaving Almuth Schult no chance in the Germany goal with a perfectly placed shot.

Marozsan almost scores audacious goal

The goal changed the game. France proceeded to take control and managed to win back the ball on multiple occasions in midfield thanks to their frequent pressure. Despite that, captain Dzsenifer Marozsan almost equalised in the 24th minute, when she almost caught out France’s goalkeeper Sarah Bouhhadi with an audacious effort from the halfway line.

Shortly before half time, both teams passed up big opportunities to score in what had become a very evenly matched encounter. Firstly, Valerie Gauvin narrowly headed over the German goal (38’), while Alexandra Popp came very close to scoring at the other end after some stellar build-up play from Anna Blässe (39’). A leg injury to France’s Aissatou Tounkara meant the game was stopped for a few minutes and a longer period of added time was played. Popp had another big chance in the final minute of the half, although she put her volley over the top of the goal (45+8’).

France score twice after the break

Jones made two changes to the side to start the second half, with Svenja Huth and Lea Schüller coming on for Jacqueline Klasen and Lina Magull. The changes almost paid dividends in the 50th minute. Huth crossed the ball into the box with Däbritz seemingly free in the centre, although the ball was cleared at the final moment before it could reach her. Germany upped the tempo from then on, in order to try and pressure the French defence into making mistakes.
