Germany hold on to first place in world rankings

The World Cup and Confederations Cup holders have defended their first placed position in the FIFA world rankings thanks to another perfect month of qualification in October. Joachim Löw’s team replaced the five-time world champions Brazil at the top of the rankings in September, and now lead the Brazilians on 1631 points in comparison to their 1619. European champions Portugal occupy third place. The next FIFA world rankings will be released on 23rd November.

Germany set a record in the month of October, after they came out victorious against Northern Ireland (3-1) and Azerbaijan (5-1) to complete their perfect World Cup qualification campaign. Not only this, but they also recorded a goal difference of +41. Spain managed a similar feat in qualification for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, but their goal difference was worse.

There are two newcomers to the top ten in the form of Spain and Peru, who occupy places 8 and 10 with 1218 and 1160 points respectively. Peru managed to qualify for the World Cup qualification playoff round, where they will face New Zealand. It is the first time in their history that they have been ranked in the top 10.
