A late equalizer in the overtime of the second half ended the dreams of the German national team of qualifying early for the knock-out stage on the second game day of the World Cup. The German national team went in front in the 19th minute after a header by Miroslav Klose, but Robbie Keane equalised the score in the overtime of the seond half. The game ended 1-1. The last German game in group E takes place on Tuesday in Shizuoka againt Cameroon. Kick-off time is 13.30 CEST.
In front of 35.000 spectators in the "Prefectural Kashima Soccer Stadion" of Ibaraki the Irish had the better start. But Klose ended the offensive play of the Irish with his fourth tournament goal. The German offence with Carsten Jancker and Klose put the Irish defence in danger quite a few times during the game, but didn't hit.
In the second half the Irish fought for the draw, but DFB keeper Oliver Kahn always saved the Germans until the last minute, when Keane used a mistake in the German defence for the equalizer.
