Federal chancellor Gerhard Schröder congratulated the national team for reaching the second round at the World Cup in Korea and Japan. After the 2-0 against Cameroon the chancellor praised the "team spirit" of the Völler team.
"I admire the performance of the German team", Schröder wrote and added: "Rudi Völler managed to raise the team spirit in the German side." The advance to the next stage made him "very happy".
The chancellor is known to be a big fan of the German champion Borussia Dortmund.
