Fitness coach Kugel leaves DFB team

After eight years with the DFB, Yann-Benjamin Kugel has left his position as the national team’s fitness coach. Kugel will not be a member of the World champions’ support staff at the international fixtures against Spain and Brazil in March.

”I’ve been thinking a lot about my career future over the last few weeks. After some intense and fantastic years with the national team, I’d like a new challenge and utilise my experience and expertise otherwise in the world of football. It was a difficult decision for me to leave the national team, but I’m sure that I’ll meet new challenges and I’ll be successful with those if I make a complete cut from my current work. I’d like to thank national coach Jogi Löw and business manager Oliver Bierhoff for their understanding, for obliging and for their support over the last few years. It was always special to me to be able to help and support my country’s team; there’s a special feeling in the team and you get the chance to work at the very highest level. Working together with Germany’s best players was an exceptional experience. I wish the coaches, players and staff success in the summer,” says 38-year-old Kugel.

Löw: “We’d like to thank him for his support”

”We were regretful to hear Benny’s decision. He’s earned respect and was always was very passionate about his work for the team and helped to improve the team consistently. He has a huge amount of expertise and experience and I can imagine that we’ll see him around again. We’re in and will remain in close communication. Thanks to Benny informing us of his decision in good time, we have enough time now to adapt our plans before the World Cup,” says business manager Oliver Bierhoff.

National coach Joachim Löw says: “Benny Kugel was always a solid and reliable part of our team. The highlight of our work together was the World Cup in 2014. I wish him all the best for his private life and his work and all of us at the national team would like to thank him for his support in the last few years.”
