Champions League Final in Munich Olympic Stadium

As the European football governing body UEFA announced earlier today, the 2012 UEFA Women's Champions League final will be played at the Olympiastadion in Munich on Thursday 17 May, with kick-off scheduled at 18:00 local time. The match will be played two days before the men's final taking place in the Munich Allianz-Arena.

As part of the overall effort to promote the event, Steffi Jones, currently director of girls' and women's football at the German Football Association (DFB), will be involved in the run-up to the game in her capacity of ambassador for the UEFA women's football development programme. "I am proud to be the ambassador of a match that can rightly be called the highlight of the European women's club football calendar. We need club competitions at the highest level, such as the UEFA Women's Champions League, to further develop the women's game around Europe. I am sure the final will be a great success and Germany is looking forward to welcoming the finalist teams to Munich in May," she said.

Final fixture won't feature familiar foes

After Madrid (Getafe) and London, Munich is the third venue for the final of a competition that, in 2009, was conceived as the successor to the former UEFA Women's Cup. Incidentally, the previous two finals were contested by the same two teams, with 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam and side Olympique Lyon each carrying off the trophy once – the German club in 2009, the French one in 2010.

And while both of them are still in the running this time 'round, the billboards announcing the final will only feature one of them – if at all, because only if both win their respective quarter-final match (Potsdam vs. FC Rossiyanka/Russia and Lyon vs. Bröndby IF/Denmark) will they meet in the semis.

1. FFC Frankfurt waiting in the wings

Speaking of women's football, there's one club you write off at your peril – German record champions 1. FFC Frankfurt who are to meet Swedish side LdB FC Malmö in the quarter-finals, the fourth of which will see England's Arsenal FC play against FC Göteborg, also from Sweden. The two-leg quarter-finals have been scheduled to be played on 14/15 and 21/22 March, with the semi-finals taking place on 14/15 and 21/22 April 2012.

Originally built to accommodate the 1972 Summer Olympics and seating 80,000 spectators, the Munich Olympiastadion has seen many a great match. Stand-out occasions were the 1974 FIFA World Cup final and the EURO 88 final, not to forget the 1979 UEFA Champions' Cup final as well as the 1993 and 1997 UEFA Champions League finals.
