It’s the final dreams are made of. In the Women’s DFB-Pokal final on May 19th, VfL Wolfsburg take on FC Bayern Munich. While Wolfsburg will be participating in their fourth successive final in Köln, the team from Munich will be in their first final since 2012. FC Bayern reached the final by beating Turbine Potsdam 3-1 on Sunday afternoon. Germany international Melanie Behringer had a large part to play in that and the 32-year-old spoke to DFb.de ahead of the final about the semi-final victory, her special relationship with the DFB-Pokal final and her side’s end of season run-in in the Women’s Bundesliga.
DFB.de: What was the mood like in the dressing room after the semi-final win?
Melanie Behringer: Relieved and excited. We sang and danced. We were simply delighted to have reached the DFB-Pokal final. It’ll be a first for some of the girls.
DFB.de: What was the recipe for success in the 3-1 win?
Behringer: All in all, we deserved to win the game I think. We scored at the right times. It was frustrating to concede shortly before full-time but thankfully it didn’t change the result too much.
DFB.de What are you expecting from the final in Köln?
Behringer: In VfL Wolfsburg, we’re facing a fierce opponent. The pressure is off in a sense as Wolfsburg are clear favourites. They reach the final almost every year and are experienced in this scenario. We want to enjoy the game but we want to make the final step and win the title. Anything is possible.
DFB.deYou’ve won the trophy twice with 1. FFC Frankfurt.
Behringer: Yes. That was back in 2011 and 2014. It was the peak of my career. I’m excited to be in the final once more but for now we have to continue to focus on our league campaign.
DFB.deDo you still think you can win the Women’s Bundesliga?
Behringer: Wolfsburg are already quite far in front but they have to come and face us in Munich. Besides, they have lots of midweek games between now and the end of the season. Our main aim though has to be solidifying our second place and qualifying for the Champions League.
