Barca continue at the top of La Liga

Marc-André ter Stegen's FC Barcelona continue to lead La Liga. On a night where Lionel Messi once again stole the show, the Blaugrana swept aside SD Eibar 6-1. The win is Barca’s fifth in a row, meaning they now have a five-point advantage over second-place Sevilla, who play this evening against UD Las Palmas (22:00 CEST).

With DFB Team international ter Stegen in goal, the Argentinian Messi gave his team the lead from the penalty spot in the 20th minute, and he went on to score three more times (59’, 62’, 87’). Paulinho (38’) and Denis Suarez (53’) were the other Barca players on target, while Sergi Enrich scored for the Basques (57’).

Leicester knock out Liverpool

Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool have exited the EFL Cup in the third round. Without a number of starting players, the Reds lost to Leicester City 2-0 on Tuesday night. Former Mainz forward Shinji Okazaki opened the scoring for the 2016 Premier League champions (65’), and the Japanese then set up Islam Slimani for the hosts’ second (78’).

Germany international Emre Can did not find himself in the squad for this cup game, while goalkeeper Loris Karius sat on the bench. For Leicester, Aleksandar Dragovic, who is currently on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, made his debut.
