World Cups, European Championships, Olympic Games, International matches, training courses. 2016 is a busy year for the various outfits of the Germany national team. Who is playing who, and when? DFB.de have detailed the schedules of Germany’s teams.

Die Mannschaft

The year of the European Championships in France gets under way with a marketing day over the 25th and 26th of January. In a sporting sense, it all kicks off in March – and there’s not much time to rest. England are the first opponents on 26th March in Berlin, and then they travel down to Munich to play Italy on the 29th March. Two games with one aim; match practice before France.

The squad will then continue their preparations on Lago Maggiore in Switzerland, staying at the Hotel Giardino in Ascona. This is a location they are familiar with, as this was their base during EURO 2008. As part of their camp there, they will place two friendly matches, including the traditional DFB charity match.

The team will travel to their base camp in Évian-les-Bains shortly before the start of the tournament. It’s not Campo Bahia, but they will enjoy the facilities provided by Hotel Ermitage, and the nearby Lake Geneva. From Évian, they will make their way to Lille where they will face Ukraine in their opening match (12th June, 21:00 CET). Next, they face Poland at Saint-Denis in Paris (16th June, 21:00 CET), before their final group match versus Northern Ireland (21st June, 18:00 CET) in Paris. EURO 2016 ends on the 10th July with the final at the Stade de France.

U21s

The first fixture of the New Year is due to take place on the 24th March in the Volksbank stadium as part of their U21 European Championship qualification campaign. Horst Hrubesch’s side face the Faroe Islands, bottom of qualification Group 7. Germany are leading the group after five games, and are yet to lose any points. On the 29th March, the U21s face Russia away. After that, they can look forward to an exciting summer. On the 3rd August, the Olympic Games begin in Rio de Janeiro, and Horst Hrubesch will be looking for a grand finale to mark the end of his time as coach.

After the Olympics, Marcus Sorg will fill the intimidating shoes of Hrubesch. The new team will meet at the end of August, hoping to secure their place in EURO 2017. Their first game under Sorg will take place on the 2nd September against Slovakia, which has been organised as a warm-up ahead of the qualifying match against Finland. The group stages will be wrapped up in October with a game against Russia (7th October) and Austria (11th October). The U21s will end the year with two final games, namely against Turkey (11th November) and Poland (15th November).

U20s

The U20 national side will come together for the first time in 2016 on 20th March, and Frank Wormuth’s team will face Switzerland twice. They will play first at home on 23rd March and then in Delémont three days later.

Their next international game will take place at the beginning of September and in November, but exact details have not yet been finalised. In October, they will take part in a four-nation tournament with Turkey, the Netherlands and England.

U19s

The U19s will spend the beginning of the year gearing up for home European Championships. The tournament will take place from the 11th to 24th July in Baden-Württemberg. Coach Marcus Sorg will get his players together for two friendlies against South Korea (26th and 29th March). They will also play the opening match of the European Championship in the Mercedes-Benz-Arena in Stuttgart.

After the EUROs come the EUROs. The U19s will begin preparation for the qualification for EURO 2017 in Georgia. They will face Georgia, the Republic of Ireland and Gibraltar over the 6th, 8th and 11th October. The two best teams of the 13 groups will proceed to the second round of qualification.

U18s

The U18s have their first challenge in March of this year. Guido Streichsbier will meet up with his players on the 20th March, ahead of their two matches against France (Salmrohr, 24th March and in Trier 28th March).

They will then have a month apart, before their training course from the 3rd to 6th April in Kaiserau. On the 17th April, they will meet to prepare for their game against Switzerland four days later. Three weeks later they face Ireland (10th may).

In October, they have another two courses (3rd to 6th and 23rd to 26th) and a tournament (6th to 11th October in Duisburg). The year will be capped off with the traditional winter tournament hosted by the Israeli Football Association from the 11th to 17th November.

U17s

The U17s have already been busy in 2016. Meikel Schönweitz’s side have been in La Manga completing a training camp in preparation for the Algarve Cup from the 1st to 10th February. As part of this tournament they face the Netherlands in Lagos (5th February), England on the 7th February and finally Portugal on the 9th.

They are then in action again in March, where they will be looking to qualify for the EUROs in Azerbaijan. Germany are the hosts, and will play Slovakia on the 24th march, Bulgaria on the 26th and the Netherlands on the 29th. Were they to qualify, they would begin preparations for the tournament on the 27th April.

They will then have the four-nation tournament between Italy, the Netherlands and Israel to look forward to from the 5th to 14th September. They will also take part in a friendly tournament from the 28th September to 3rd October in Croatia, and will play the hosts, England and Greece.
