How does qualification work? As well as the professional clubs from the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga, the top four teams from the third division are also awarded places in the DFB Cup. The line-up is completed by the 21 regional cup winners. Special provisions are, however, applied in Bavaria, Lower Saxony and Westphalia.
Due to the particular set-up of the competition, there can sometimes be big and small special cases. For example, VfB Lübeck from Schleswig-Holstein qualified for the DFB Cup. The reason for this is that Holstein Kiel finished in the top four of the third division, and made it to the Schleswig-Holstein Cup final, so Lübeck now find themselves in the first round.
In Lower Saxony, both finalists normally qualify for the DFB Cup because of the size of the association. For that reason SV Meppen as well as VfL Osnabrück had already secured their tickets to the first round of the DFB Cup, even before Osnabrück won the shootout 5-4 on 13th May.
There is only one final result still pending. The Schleswig-Holstein Cup final was meant to take place between VfB Lübeck and Holstein Kiel on 29th May, with both teams already qualified for the DFB Cup. Kiel, however, qualified for the promotion playoffs to the 2. Bundesliga, and so the cup final was postponed, with a new date yet to be confirmed. The last participant for the DFB Cup will therefore be sourced from the Oberliga Westphalia. Current leaders TuS Erndtebrück need one more win to earn promotion to the Regionalliga West and, with that, their place in the DFB Cup. Erndtebrück play their final game against Westfalia Herne on Sunday, and then the list of participating teams in the DFB Cup 2015/2016 will be complete.
