Hrubesch picks Toljan and Goretzka in provisional European Championship squad

28 players have been selected in the provisional squad for upcoming U21 European Championships in the Czech Republic. Horst Hrubesch selected 1899 Hoffenheim's Jeremy Toljan for the first time as well as reacalling Schalke's Leon Goretzka, who has returned from a long injury.

“Jeremy played very well in the second half of the season,” said Hrubesch. “He deserves a chance to fight for a spot in the team.” Hrubesch is also excited about Goretzka’s return to the team. “I am very happy for Leon. He's fought back strongly after being badly injured. We will now wait and see how fit he is, as this will determine how involved he is.”

Hrubesch must eliminate five players before 7th June

The U21 team met in Frankfurt today for a two day training camp. Marc-André ter Stegen, whose Barcelona team face Juventus in June's Champions League final, as well as DFB Cup finalists Maximilian Arnold and Robine Knoche of VfL Wolfsburg and Dortmund’s Matthias Ginter, were missing. Lastly, Emre Can of Liverpool, and Serge Gnabry of Arsenal, will also be missing as they are still with their respective clubs. From 2nd-10th June the team will be training in the Austrian town of Leogang.

Hrubesch will cut his squad to 23 players before 7th June. “We have an unbelievable amount of talent in our line-up” said Hrubesch. “Everyone at the training camp will have the chance to make things harder for us.”
