Löw nominates team for US-trip
Germany coach Joachim Löw has called up a squad of 23 players for the German men's national team to the USA, consisting of long-established national team players, returnees, and several uncapped players. The trip across the pond will feature two matches, the first against Ecuador (in Boca Raton's FAU Stadium on 29 May 2013, 14:30 h local time), the second against host team USA (in Washington's RFK Stadium on 2 June 2013, 14:30 h local time).
Löw commented: "International matches always have a special place in the fixture calendar, and for the selected players it's a dream finish to the current season. I am convinced that we will be able to field very competitive sides against Ecuador and the USA. The new players will love the chance to present themselves in action, and others, who maybe haven't been so much in the spotlight so far, now have their opportunity to assume responsibility."
Aogo, Beck, Reinartz, Hunt return to the fold
Lukas Podolski and Per Mertesacker (Arsenal FC, with 108 and 88 caps, respectively) will be the most experienced members of the squad that is going to take off from Frankfurt airport at 09:55 h on 22 May 2013 onboard flight LH 462 to Miami.
They are expected to provide guidance to first-timers Philipp Wollscheid and Sidney Sam (Bayer Leverkusen), Nicolai Müller (FSV Mainz 05), and Max Kruse (SC Freiburg). "All of these players have put in class performances for their clubs over the entire season", says Löw, "so they fully deserve this call-up. And I'm looking forward to getting a close-up of what they can do for the national team."
Dennis Aogo (Hamburger SV), Andreas Beck (1899 Hoffenheim), Stefan Reinartz (Bayer 04 Leverkusen), and Aaron Hunt (Werder Bremen) are four players who won their first few caps some time ago but hadn't featured for Germany in the recent past. "They will be given another chance to prove themselves, and I'm sure that's exactly what they'll do."
No FC Bayern players
For once, Germany will have to make do without any FC Bayern Munich players who are of course involved in the UEFA Champions League final in London on 25 May, as well as in the DFB Cup final against VfB Stuttgart in Berlin on 1 June 2013. Neither are Mesut Özil and Sami Khedira going to available as they'll be tied up with Real Madrid commitments.
Obviously, the UEFA Champions League final also has an impact on the availability of Borussia Dortmund players. Nevertheless, after the match – and regardless of how it goes – Sven Bender and Kevin Großkreutz will join their Germany team mates and complete the squad that is due to face the USA men's national team; this also applies to Miroslav Klose who will add a German touch to an otherwise purely "Roman" Italian Cup final, with Lazio Roma meeting AS Roma on 26 May 2013.
Questioned about the unavailability of some players and the clash of fixtures, in particular with regard to the Champions League final, national team manager Oliver Bierhoff says: "We have not and will not waver in following our plan that was agreed upon long before the Champions League season. After an exhausting season, our players need a long summer break, allowing them to be physically and mentally fresh when their clubs' pre-season training begins in July.
