During the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, the German national team will be based almost 30 kilometres north of Porto Seguro on the Bahia coast. After carrying out an inspection following the group draw in Costa do Sauipe, the national team’s sporting management opted for "Campo Bahia", a sport and nature resort near Cabralia, where Portuguese explorers first sighted land when discovering Brazil in 1500.

"Campo Bahia" will provide ideal conditions for both the team and its support staff, with a nearby training pitch, its own fitness centre and sufficient functional space for the team’s needs. The most crucial requirements for the DFB’s representatives were logistics and infrastructure links, as well as ensuring the camp was located in the same climate zone as the venues for Germany’s three group matches. Porto Seguro airport can be reached in less than 45 minutes, and the flight times to Salvador, Fortaleza and Recife are no more than two hours each.

National team manager Oliver Bierhoff said: "Bearing in mind the size of the country and the considerable distances between each tournament venue, it was important for us to minimise the strain of travelling to and from matches as much as possible. Acclimatisation and recovery will also play a major role at this World Cup, and our camp offers ideal conditions in these respects. Due to the early kick-off times and the heat and high humidity expected in Salvador, Fortaleza and Recife, we looked for a base where the players could adapt effectively to the kind of things they can expect to encounter during each match."

"Campo Bahia" is currently still under construction and will be completed in April 2014. The 15,000 square metre complex includes 14 two-storey accommodation blocks with a total of 60 rooms. The blocks form a ring around a central building complex containing the open-plan kitchen, pool facilities and function rooms. The project is being overseen by HIRMER Immobilien GmbH & Co. KG, whose chief executive Dr Christian Hirmer said: "We are delighted to be supporting the DFB and its team with an ideal camp, and assisting the people of the Bahia region with our ‘Campo Bahia’ project. As part of the project, we are also establishing a new football youth academy and building the Ampare orphanage in Santo André."

The team will arrive at "Campo Bahia" on 8 June 2014, eight days before Germany’s first World Cup match against Portugal in Salvador in 16 June. Oliver Bierhoff said: "I’m sure we’ll feel right at home there. The camp offers everything we could possible want during what we hope will be a lengthy stay during the World Cup. We can train, recover and focus there equally well. The compact nature of the site is also very important for us. There are plenty of opportunities for players to take time out by themselves, but there is also a central area that will help to foster team spirit. All of this is contained within a relatively small site, which I’m sure will have a positive effect on the atmosphere and spirit within the camp."
