Würzburger kickers hoping for historic win against 1860 München

It has been just three weeks since Würzburger Kickers and 1860 München met in the 2. Bundesliga and on Tuesday evening (18:30 CEST) the two sides are reunited in the DFB Cup, with a spot in the round of 16 up for grabs to the winner. Following a strong start to the season and a 2-0 win in their last meeting, Kickers go into the tie as favourites against the Munich side. Bern Hollerbach’s find themselves near the top of the table with 17 points to their name, while 1860 lie 15th following several recent defeats.

Both teams beat 2. Bundesliga opponents in the first round – Würzburg beating current league leaders Eintracht Braunschweig 1-0 (aet) and 1860 seeing out a 2-1 win against Karlsruher SC.

A win tonight would be Würzburg’s greatest success in the DFB Cup – the second round is the furthest they have reach in their previous six appearances in the competition. The Munich side have a much more decorated history in the competition, having won what then known as the competition in both 1942 (under its then name Tschammerpokal) and again in 1964.
