World Champ Ginter: “I can play anywhere”

Matthias Ginter put in a flawless performance during Borussia Dortmund’s 3-0 victory over VfL Wolfsburg on matchday 21 of the Bundesliga. The Germany international completed 86 passes, by far the most of any player on the pitch. Solid defensively and involved in BVB’s attacking third – here is a summary of Ginter’s performance against the Wolves.

After the game, the 23-year-old spoke with DFB.de about his role in Dortmund’s game, the German national team and his return to Freiburg next Saturday.

Interviewer: Matthias Ginter, did you get a touch on the ball before Lukasz Piszczek made it 2-0?

Matthias Ginter: I definitely made contact with the ball. Whether the official assist is mine or someone else’s has to be decided by others though.

Interviewer: Lukasz Piszczek has already scored five goals this season, making him one of the most prolific defenders in the Bundesliga. What can you still learn from him?

Ginter: He’s definitely found his scoring touch this season. It’s about time I score again myself.

Interviewer: This victory has lifted Dortmund into third place. How do you assess this win?

Ginter: First of all, it was highly deserved. We could have already been further in front earlier in the match. We showed determination and focus to score a second and third goal. We really deserved it.

Interviewer: You completed more passes than anybody else on the pitch. Are you satisfied with your own performance?

Ginter: I don’t like talking about myself and I rarely do it. I let others do that for me. I’m just happy that we won today and kept a clean sheet.

Interviewer: Once again, you featured in central defence. Do you care which position the coach plays you in?

Ginter: I really don’t mind whether I play as a centre-back, a right full-back or in defensive midfield; all of those have their advantages. I think I can play anywhere. In the end the coach has to make the decision.

Interviewer: Does it affect your chances of playing in the national team?

Ginter: We will have to wait and see. I think it’s an advantage for a player of my age. I’m not that old yet, so to be able to play various positions and to keep developing in those areas should help me. One day we’ll certainly try to find me a specific position to play in but until then, we’ll keep going like this.

Interviewer: Dortmund are heading to Freiburg next weekend. Will this encounter against your former club hold any special meaning for you?

Ginter: Of course. My friends and family will all be there and it’s simply home for me. I played there for nine years and therefore it will always remain a special place for me. I look forward to going there next week.
