Werner on target in Leipzig victory – Bayern dismantle HSV

The top three sides in the Bundesliga cruised to victory on matchday 22. Table-toppers FC Bayern München steamrolled Hamburger SV in a 8-0 home victory, while FCB’s close pursuers RB Leipzig managed to secure a 3-1 win at home against 1. FC Köln. Borussia Dortmund claimed three points in Freiburg, courtesy of a confident 3-0 win. Meanwhile, Bayer 04 Leverkusen suffered another setback, losing 2-0 at home to 1. FSV Mainz 05. SV Darmstadt 98 remain bottom after a 2-1 home loss to FC Augsburg.

Bayern needed 17 minutes to find the net for the first time through Arturo Vidal, but the goals flowed freely afterwards. Robert Lewandowski scored twice before half-time and once afterwards to put the hosts into a 4-0 lead after 54 minutes. David Alaba slotted home two minutes later after a fine assist by Germany international Thomas Müller. A brace from substitute Kingsley Coman and Arjen Robben’s late strike saw Bayern record an 8-0 triumph and keep their five-point advantage over Leipzig, while Hamburg remain in the danger zone.

Köln got off to a poor start in Leipzig and fell behind just five minutes into the game when Emil Forsberg converted from Germany U21 international Thomas Werner’s assist. Leipzig remained in control and doubled their advantage before the break when Dominic Maroh put the ball into his own net. Köln were back in the game however right after the break, as Yuya Osako found the target. However, Leipzig quickly restored their advantage when Werner grabbed his 13th goal of the campaign.

Dortmund were the dominant side in Freiburg from the opening whistle. Consequently, they took the lead through Sokratis after 13 minutes. After the break, Germany international Marco Reus teed up Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and the Gabon international added a second goal to join Lewandowski at the top of the goalscorer charts. BVB keep the pace with Bayern and Leipzig, but trail second place by eight points.

Öztunali scores in Mainz victory

In Leverkusen, Mainz paved their way to victory with two early goals from Stefan Bell and Germany U21 international Levin Öztunali.

Marcel Heller gave Darmstadt the lead shortly after the break against Augsburg. But all dreams of securing a victory only lasted shortly, as FCA skipper Paul Verhaegh levelled from the spot seven minutes later. A late winning goal from Raul Bobadilla means that Darmstadt now sit eight points off the relegation play-off spot.

Hertha move up to fifth

Hertha BSC secured a 2-0 victory against Eintracht Frankfurt in Saturday’s evening fixture on Bundesliga matchday 22. Goals from Vedad Ibisevic and Vladimir Darida sees Hertha claim fifth place in the standings and move ahead of Frankfurt. It was already Hertha’s ninth home victory of the season – more than any other team in the league.

In a game that featured few chances on either side, Hertha took the lead in the second half when Ibisevic slotted home the rebound from Salomon Kalou’s attempt, which was initially saved by Eintracht keeper Lukas Hradecky. It came worse for Frankfurt, as they had Haris Seferovic sent off after 78 minutes, only to concede a second goal five minutes later from Darida’s header.
