Extra time: 12 games in the first round went to extra time, this many games haven’t gone to extra time since the 1981/1982 season. Mind you, back then 64 games were played in the first round.

Lottery: Seven ties in the first round went all the way to penalties. With that, a DFB Cup record was equalled as seven games were also decided from the spot in the 2003/2004 and 2014/2015 seasons. In the first round this year, more games have gone to extra time and penalties than in the whole 2015/2016 season. Last season, eleven games went to extra time and only six of those games were decided by a penalty shootout.

Quality from the spot: Six of the seven teams playing in a higher division than their opposition triumphed from the spot. The only exception was in the Saxony derby, contested by Dresden and Leipzig, where Dresden came out on top. Bundesliga teams Mainz (vs. Unterhaching), Hertha BSC (vs. Jahn), Frankfurt (vs. 1. FC Magdeburg) and Ingolstadt (vs. Erzgebirge) all defeated their lower league opposition.

Negative record holders: Werder Bremen created a new negative record for a Bundesliga side with their 2-1 defeat to Sportfreunde Lotte. No other Bundesliga team has been knocked out of the cup more times than Werder in the first round (12 times). However, the victory for Lotte meant they reached the second round of the DFB Cup for the first time in their history.

Used to a marathon: For Hertha BSC, their encounter with 3. Liga side SSV Jahn Regensburg was the 50th time that they have gone to extra time in the DFB Cup – a record! The team from the capital won the penalty shootout 5-3.

When will they break their spell? FC 08 Villingen lost 4-1 to Bundesliga side Schalke 04. That means they’ve lost all nine of their DFB Cup matches which they’ve contested – this makes them the record losers of the competition as no other team has played as many games without winning. As BFC Preußen lost to 1. FC Köln, SSV Ulm remain the only team from the 5. Liga to beat a Bundesliga side. Ulm beat 1. FC Nürnberg 2-1 in the 2001/2002 season.

Goals, goals and more goals: In total, 116 goals were scored in the 32 games of the first round – 24 more than last season. Only the 2011/2012 season provided more goals (145) since the start of the more detailed data collection in 2008/2009.
