Warm welcome for world champions in Ascona

As die Mannschaft gathered in Frankfurt to head off to the training camp in Ascona, Oliver Bierhoff made a short speech in which he firstly congratulated the players: "For your call-ups to the squad and for lots of individual and team success." The players from double winners Bayern München, Juventus and Barcelona appreciated and acknowledged Bierhoff’s remarks and equally paid tribute to Mario Gomez, who won the Turkish first division with Besiktas and was crowned top scorer. Bierhoff addressed the whole team and said: "You have all achieved lots over the past few months and we now face the next major challenge. We want to tackle this together with a lot of energy and enthusiasm."

Applause broke out, the message was clear: the preparation can begin, we are ready. Then their flight to Lugano departed. Benvenuti Germany, welcome, world champions! The team received a warm welcome on Tuesday evening.

"We are going to offer the best conditions"

"We are happy and proud that they have once again chosen our beautiful city. We are going to offer them the best conditions," said Ascona’s Mayor Luca Pissoglio, who personally welcomed Joachim Löw and his squad along with several other important dignitaries. Upon arrival at Hotel Giardino, where the German team stayed in EURO 2008 in Switzerland and Austria, hotel director Philippe Frutiger Spalier and his staff greeted the team and wished them luck.

After checking in, the players all trained individually, went for a bike ride or took a walk. Joachim Löw will put his side through their paces in the first training session on Wednesday morning at 10:30 CEST – that’s when preparation for the European Championship in France truly gets underway.
