U20s to take part in 'Elite League'

From the 2017/18 season onwards, the Germany U20s will take part in the newly-established international tournament “U20s Elite League’. Eight teams will now take part in the tournament instead of the four teams that have competed up until this point, those being Germany, Italy, Poland and Switzerland. Czech Republic, France, England and the Netherlands will now also take part in the tournament now.

“Expanding the U20s Elite League is an important step for players in this age bracket. The fact that eight of the best European football nations have joined together to create this competition proves that it is considered important in other countries as well. I am looking forward to watching some exciting games of high quality and I am convinced that the Germany U20s will attract even more public awareness,” said provisional DFB sporting director Horst Hrubesch.

Everyone against everyone

Each team will face each other over the course of the season. That means each team will play seven games in the ‘Elite League’ throughout the year. Teams who play four games at home will only play at home three times in next year’s tournament. Whoever has the most points at the end of the seven games will win the tournament. If two teams are level on points, the winner will be decided by goal difference, and if they are level on goal difference, most goals scored will be the decisive factor. The Germany U20s will play their first game away against Czech Republic in September 2017.
