U20s going into Mexico meeting with confidence

The Germany U20 team will play their second match of their World Cup at 13:00 CEST today, with Mexico as their challengers. The tournament began in disappointing fashion with a 2-0 defeat to Venezuela, putting Guido Streichsbier’s side under pressure ahead of their second game, but the head coach and his team are maintaining their confidence and optimism.

Despite the setback in the last game, there is a clear air of confidence surrounding the players and those connected with the team. “The team know that they are improving physically all the time and they will continue to acclimatise. We remain confident that we will be able to progress to the next round,” stated Streichsbier.

Horn and Neuhaus in relegation play-off – Torunarigha and Iyoha return

The Bundesliga’s final matchday did not go according to plan for the U20 team. With Jannes Horn’s VfL Wolfsburg and Florian Neuhaus’ 1860 München finishing in the 16th places of the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga, respectively, both are required for their teams’ relegation play-off matches, and so cannot join up with the squad. The news sees Streichsbier’s squad reduced from 21 players to 19.

However, there was a piece of good news for the squad, as Hertha BSC’s Jordan Torunarigha travelled to join up with the squad on Monday. Also arriving on Tuesday will be Emmanuel Iyoha, adding an extra attacking threat to the side. “That will be good for the team. Both are well-regarded in the group and can help give us a bit of an extra push,” said Streichsbier.

Streichsbier: “It will be similarly difficult to the Venezuela game”

Mexico also had a rough time of things in their World Cup opening match, falling to a shock last minute 3-2 defeat against outsiders Vanuatu. They had been 2-0 up at the break, but over the second 45 conceded twice on the counter and were eventually sunk by a 94th minute winner by Kevin Lara.

Despite their own first match defeat, Streichsbier expects a tough challenge against the talented Mexico side. “Mexico have represented at every tier of youth football. They are a technically strong side with pace and are difficult to control. Their combination play going forward is excellent. It will be similarly difficult to the game against Venezuela” – but hopefully with a more preferable outcome.
