Tough opponents for Schalke and Mainz

Bundesliga sides FC Schalke 04 and FSV Mainz 05 will face some tricky opponents in the group stages of the Europa League. Schalke, who have been drawn in Group I, will meet Austrian champions FC Red Bull Salzburg, FK Krasnodar and OGC Nice. Mainz are in group C and will come up against Belgian record champions RSC Anderlecht, AS St. Etienne and SC Qabala. The fixtures were confirmed after the draw on Friday in Monaco.

Mainz are in the Europa League group stages once again after two previous failed attempts to qualify for the knockout stages. Schalke, who won the UEFA Cup in 1997, were knocked out of last season’s competition in the round of 32 against Shakhtar Donetsk.

The first match gets underway on 15th September. The final will be played in Solna near Stockholm on 24th May 2017. Hertha BSC, the third team to qualify for the competition from Germany, were eliminated earlier in the competition by Danish side Brøndby IF.
