The most frequent cup duels

The fixture between FC Bayern München and FC Augsburg has emerged as a long-running clash in the DFB Cup. The two teams face each other in the second round of the tournament on 26th October for the third time in four years. DFB.de looks at the oldest cup clashes over the years .

FC Bayern against Augsburg: The two sides met for the first time in the DFB Cup in 1983. Bayern took the match away from home, with their team including football greats such as goalkeeper Jean-Marie Pfaff, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Klaus Augenthaler. At stake was a place in the last 16. The favourites, Bayern München, eventually came out on top. After going into half time with a narrow 1-0 lead, Bayern hit the accelerator and scored five goals in the final 30 minutes, easing to a 6-0 victory. It would then be 33 years before these teams would once again be drawn against each other in the cup.

However this fixture returned to the DFB Cup in 2012 and it was FC Bayern once again who were victorious. Manuel Neuer, Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Toni Kroos, who would all go on to become world champions in 2014, helped Bayern to knock out the Fuggerstädter with a 2-0 last-16 win. Coincidentally the same teams met in exactly the same round of the competition just one year later in December 2013. An early goal from Arjen Robben and a Müller strike late on allowed Bayern to progress to the next round. Now the Bavarian rivals must fight each other once again for a place in the third round of the cup in what will be their third meeting in the competition in four years, while it is also the first time in the tournament that Munich will host their fellow Bavarian rivals. Notably this clash has been the second most frequent to occur in the DFB Cup since the 2011/2012 season.

Bayern vs. BVB: Three finals since 2012

The most glamorous fixture in the modern-day DFB Cup is surely between Borussia Dortmund and FC Bayern. These two giants of German football have taken each other on in every season since 2012. The results over this period of time have been very even: Three wins for Bayern, Borussia Dortmund getting the upper hand twice.

The most prominent memory in people’s minds will be the thrilling encounter between the two teams in 2012. Dortmund put in an outstanding performance in this final and won the title with an emphatic 5-2 victory. But the fans did not have to wait long for a rematch: Bayern turned things around and were victorious in 2014 and 2016 when they faced BVB in the cup, with both occasions being in the final. The 2014 final ended 2-0 to Bayern after extra time and two years later, the record cup winners triumphed again thanks to a penalty shoot-out which finished 4-3 to Bayern. Last season’s final represented the ninth duel in total between Dortmund and Bayern in the DFB Cup, making it the seventh most common pairing in the competition.

At number one for that statistic sit two fixtures: With both sets of teams being drawn against each other twelve times in the cup, 1. FC Kaiserslautern vs. SV Werder Bremen and Borussia Mönchengladbach vs. FC Schalke 04, have been the most frequent encounters of the tournament.

Kaiserslautern vs. Werder: First clash as far back as 55 years ago

This tie has a particularly long history, with Werder and Kaiserslautern first facing off 55 years ago. Bremen lifted the trophy on 13th September 1961 after beating FCK in the final thanks to goals from Willi Schröder and Helmut Jagielski. However it is FCK who have the better record overall in this fixture, with six wins, two draws and Bremen winning on four occasions. Perhaps the most memorable of Kaiserslautern’s victories over Bremen occurred in the 1990 final, when FCK battled to win 3-2 thanks to a brace from Bruno Labbadia and a goal from the current Germany U21s coach Stefan Kuntz.

An equally long-standing showdown in the DFB Cup has been that between Gladbach and Schalke, with their first clash taking place in 1967. That match turned out to be a six-goal thriller, with Schalke coming off more successful with a 4-2 victory. Schalke have the better record with five wins, whereas Mönchengladbach have come out on top on four occasions. The other three encounters have ended in a draw. However it was Borussia who were victorious in the last match between the two sides, celebrating a 2-0 win over S04 in the last year’s second round, with Lars Stindl and Thorgan Hazard getting the goals for the Fohlenelf.

Just behind with eleven meetings in the cup is FC Bayern vs. Hamburger SV, while Bayern have also faced VfB Stuttgart, FC Schalke 04 and 1. FC Kaiserlautern on ten occasions.
