Ter Stegen celebrates successful return as Barcelona triumph in Bilbao

Die Mannschaft goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen was able to celebrate a successful return to the Barcelona starting eleven, as his team overcame a robust Athletic Bilbao 1-0. The win put Barcelona back to the top of the table, after Ivan Rakitic’s 21st minute header gave them the lead, with ter Stegen’s performance instrumental in his side keeping a clean sheet.

Both Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez were inches from adding goals of their own, but met with steely Athletic resolve. At the other end, ter Stegen put on an excellent show, making big saves from Beñat in the 12th minute and from Artiz Aduriz in the 39th.

Confident performance from ter Stegen

The 24 year old remained commanding and alert after the break, as the hosts’ best chance came from a late Beñat free kick fired just wide of the mark.

Ter Stegen returned to team training on Wednesday after suffering a knee injury on 11th August. On Thursday, the sale of his rival for position Claudio Bravo to Manchester City was confirmed, leaving ter Stegen to take on the role as first choice goalkeeper full time, having previously been confined to playing almost exclusively in the Champions League and domestic cup.

Guardiola's Manchester City top of the table again

Manchester City rose back up to the top of the Premier League table, despite the absences of German internationals Ilkay Gündogan and Leroy Sané. City’s 3-1 win at home to West Ham United on Sunday afternoon saw them overtake Chelsea for pole position, after the Londoners beat newly-promoted Burnley 3-0 the day before.

Manchester City took the lead through England international Raheem Sterling in the 7th minute, doubling their lead 11 minutes later through Fernandinho. West Ham got a goal back in the 58th minute through Michail Antonio, but Sterling was on hand again to finish things off in the 92nd.

AS Roma no longer top of the table

AS Roma lost their place at the summit of the Serie A table, after drawing 2-2 with Cagliari Calcio. Antonio Rüdiger remains absent after his cruciate ligament injury.

Diego Perotti put Roma in front in the first half, with Kevin Strootman notching just after the break to put his side two goals to the good. Marco Borriello got Cagliari back into the game in the 56th minute, while the home side claimed their equaliser in the 88th minute through Marco Sau.

Rüdiger tore his anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee whilst training for the European Championship on 7th June, and only returned to training last week. The 23 year old defender posted a video from the training ground on his social media platforms, captioned “I’m running again for the first time in a long while.”

Loss for Trapp with Paris Saint-Germain

German goalkeeper Kevin Trapp’s Paris Saint-German fell to a 3-1 loss to AS Monaco in their third match of the Ligue 1 season.

Goals from Joao Moutinho and Fabinho gave the Monegasque side the lead before the break, and an own goal from Serge Aurier 10 minutes from time sealed the victory for Monaco. Edinson Cavani’s 63rd minute strike was not enough to stop Paris Saint-Germain’s from succumbing to their first loss in seven games.
