Semi-final place in danger for Kroos and Real

A place in the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey is in danger for Toni Kroos and Real Madrid. Madrid lost 2-1 to league rivals Celta Vigo in the first leg of the quarter-finals. Aspas (64’) and Jonny (70’) both scored for the guests at the Bernabeu in the space of 6 minutes. Marcelo (69’) managed to score an equaliser in between but that wasn’t enough to prevent Real from losing.

Kroos played the full 90 minutes and put on an impressive performance despite it being the second consecutive loss for Real Madrid. Real Madrid ended their run of 40 consecutive games unbeaten when they lost 2-1 to Sevilla FC last Sunday. The quarter-final second leg will be played in Vigo next Wednesday at 21:15 CET.

Liverpool progress to the next round of the FA Cup

Emre Can did not feature for Liverpool on Wednesday evening as they beat League Two side Plymouth Argyle 1-0 in a third round replay to progress to the fourth round of the FA Cup. Lucas Leiva secured the win for Liverpool by scoring his first goal for the club in over six years in the 19th minute of the game. Goalkeeper Loris Karius didn’t have a lot to do for the majority of the game. Plymouth came close to finding the equaliser when they hit the post in the 73rd minute. Divock Origi had the chance to make it 2-0 in the closing stages but he failed to convert from the spot.

Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp rested most of his first team players on Wednesday evening and instead gave a lot of young players a chance to feature. In the first meeting with Plymouth, Klopp named the club’s youngest ever starting eleven with the average age of the starting line up being just 21 years and 296 days. Liverpool will face second division side Wolverhampton Wanderers in the next round of the competition on 28th January at 13:30 CET.
