Seferovic fires Frankfurt to Bundesliga survival

Relief in Frankfurt, heartbreak in Nürnberg: Eintracht Frankfurt have retained their Bundesliga status thanks to a goal from Haris Sererovic in Monday night's relegation play-off between Eintracht Frankfurt and 1. FC Nürnberg. The 1-0 win sees Frankfurt avoid a fifth relegation in the club’s history, condemns Nürnberg to another season in the 2. Bundesliga.

Frankfurt were the deserved victors in the tie after playing the better football across the two legs. Nürnberg were simply too reliant on defending their marginal advantage – a 0-0 draw would have been enough to see them promoted due to an away goal in the first leg (1-1) – in what proved a highly-competitive, yet hardly attractive encounter. René Weiler’s side lacked decisiveness and struggled to create anything going forward, before Seferovic’s strike in the 66th minute tipped the tie in favour of the Frankfurt side.
