Reus: “We now have a true final”

Marco Reus looked less than content on Saturday afternoon as he was being brought off the pitch in the 66th minute against 1. FC Köln. Indeed he had been Borussia Dortmund’s most dangerous player with five shots on target. Yet after scoring a goal in each his last four games Reus was unable to continue that run as Köln earned themselves a 0-0 draw at BVB. The 27-year-old talks about Dortmund’s dominance, Thomas Tuchel’s words for the team after the game and the Confederations Cup in June.

Interviewer: Marco Reus, when you were brought off after 66 minutes you looked far from happy. Why exactly was that?

Marco Reus: Because we had many chances to score, including myself, but we just couldn’t put them away.

Question: You recorded the most shots on target for Dortmund. Why do you think you failed to find the back of the net?

Reus: Power and precision. I think that’s what was missing for me today. That’s just the way it goes sometimes. Afterwards we all agreed that we had put in a good performance. Köln had two good opportunities in the first half but apart from that we dominated the game. We got off to a good start after our difficult cup game in Munich. The only thing we really failed to do was score a goal.

Interviewer: How do you assess the 0-0 draw with Köln?

Reus: We can only be criticised for not scoring. Apart from that we created many chances and had opportunities to take the lead, but since we failed to do that we have to live with this point.

Interviewer: Your coach Thomas Tuchel rounded up the players after the game and gave a speech in the changing rooms. What exactly did he say?

Reus: That we have nothing to regret from this game, apart from not scoring the goal. We played well, had a lot of possession, won many challenges and had a lot of opportunities.

Interviewer: Does it surprise you that you have received so much praise for a draw?

Reus: I think if you look at the stats from this game, you realise that we didn’t do anything wrong today apart from not breaking the deadlock. That’s what our coach saw as well. Obviously we would’ve liked to win the match and keep Hoffenheim at bay but unfortunately it didn’t work out for us. Next week we have a home game against Hoffenheim, which is like a true final for third place. We have to channel all of our energy for that game.

Interviewer: DFB Team coach Joachim Löw recently said he would like you to take part in the Confederations Cup in June. What are your plans for the summer?

Reus: We’ll have to see. We will definitely sit down, talk about everything and then make a decision based on what makes the most sense.
