Real excitement as U20s travel to training camp in Ascona

As flight LH 252 to Milan took off from Frankfurt on Tuesday at 12:20 CEST, there was an atmosphere of excitement, specifically for 18 of the 126 passengers. The U20s, who have been selected for a four-day training camp in Ascona, were full of anticipation for the coming days and training match against the Germany squad. "I was more than happy to postpone my holiday for this," said Maximilian Wittek from 1860 München. "This is a great way to end the season."

"It is a great honour for us to play against the national team. I’m going to try to learn as much as possible," added his U20 teammate Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Mahmoud Dahoud, who was named in Monday’s kicker magazine as the fifth-best newcomer of the season.

Nadiem Amiri pulls out

TSG 1899 Hoffenheim’s Nadiem Amiri couldn’t make the trip to Ascona. The 19-year-old had to withdraw due to injury. U20s manager Frank Wormuth hasn’t called up a replacement. The squad has therefore now been reduced from 19 to 18. "That is a perfectly adequate size," said Wormuth, who is looking forward to the training camp as much as his players. "It’s always special to train with the best of the best."

After arriving in Milan, the U20s will have a one and a half hour bus journey to Ascona before checking into the Hotel Ramada Arcadia at around 16:00 CEST. The rest of the day will be used for rehabilitation and medical checks. The first training session is scheduled for Wednesday and there’ll also be a team event in the afternoon.
