Passlack selected for European Qualification squad

The Germany under 19 team head into the first Qualification round for the European Championships in 2017 with Felix Passlack in their ranks. The 18-year-old Dortmund player has been selected alongside 19 other players in Frank Kramer’s squad for the games against Gibraltar, Ireland and Hosts Albania. If selected to play, it will be Passlack’s first games in a Germany under 19 shirt.

Passlack has already made two Bundesliga appearances for BVB this season and was a champion with Dortmund’s A side last summer. He was also awarded the gold Fritz-Walter medal in 2015. He is now tasked with helping the national under 19 side book a ticket for next year’s EUROS. Alongside Passlack, FC Köln’s Salih Özcan and Weder Bremen’s Niklas Schmidt have also gained Bundesliga experience so far this term.

Kramer: “We don’t know what to expect in Albania”

The games in Albania will be Frank Kramer’s first competitive games in charge of the under 19s, since he took over in August. His first two games at the helm ended in narrow defeats to Russia (0-1) and Holland (1-2). After both of those home games, Kramer announced he wanted to “find out which players work well together”. The DFB coach went on to explain how “We don’t have too much time to work together and have to find our feet quickly. I have to find out which players have a strong character and which ones perform well under pressure.

The former Fortuna Düsseldorf coach now seems to have found the combination he wanted.17 of the 20 players in the squad have already played at least one game in this age group. Midfielder Felix Passlack, Mainz 05 defender Fabian Grau and Hamburger SV striker Christian Stark are all new to the team.

However, Kramer is expecting a tough challenge. “We don’t know what to expect in Albania. The boys will have to fight hard and prepare for the fact that we may be playing in some difficult conditions.” The under 19 team get underway on October 6th against Gibraltar in Durrës. Germany will then play against hosts Albania in Tirana two days later, before their final meeting against Ireland on October 11th, again in Durrës. The team that qualifies first or second in their group, as well as the best placed team that finishes third, will qualify for the second round of Qualification between March 20th and March 28th next year.
